If you haven’t tried Puerto Rican cuisine, you’re in for a treat. That’s because La Famosa has recently opened in Navy Yard, showcasing “soulful Puerto Rican cooking.”
Owner and chef Joancarlo Parkhurst comes from the island himself, with fond memories of comforting family dishes. When he moved to the continental United States as a child, those flavors stayed with him, inspiring La Famosa’s 2020 grand opening.
The foods making up their menu are as vivid in taste as they are in color—in this, they truly bring the Caribbean spirit to DC. Offerings like Chuleta Kan-Kan (a pork chop dish) and pastelillos (turnovers with various fillings) highlight traditional Puerto Rican flavors through dinnertime.
Visitors coming earlier in the day can enjoy breakfast options like bocadillo (grilled ham and swiss cheese) and mallorca (a sweet bread), as well as plenty of coffee and other beverage selections.
Short of hopping on a plane to Puerto Rico yourself, you’d be hard-pressed to find these traditional dishes ready and waiting for you outside of La Famosa. Thanks to Chef Parkhurst, all these bright colors and intense flavors are just an order away. If you haven’t fallen in love with Puerto Rican food yet, La Famosa will have you swooning at first bite.
